What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to the painful spot. This energy provokes healing, regenerating and reparative processes of the bones and soft tissue. In many instances, there will be an immediate reduction in pain, as well as improved mobility and functionality.

Can Shockwave Therapy help me?

Most patients with chronic pain problems have been through various unsuccessful types of treatments. Up to 80% of the same patients worldwide report that Shockwave therapy has helped them eliminate their problem.

Shockwave therapy is effective on a wide range of soft tissue and bony conditions:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Patellar tendonitis (jumper‘s knee)
  • Tibial stress syndrome (shin pain)
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Hip pain
  • Heel pain
  • Heel spurs
  • Gout

What are the contraindications to Shockwave Therapy?

Unfortunately Shockwave therapy  is unsuitable in the following conditions:

  • If you are pregnant
  • If you have a blood clotting disorder (including thrombosis)
  • If you are taking oral anti-coagulants
  • If you have received a Steroid injection within 6 weeks
  • If you have a Pacemaker fitted
  • If tumours are present at the treatment site
  • If you have an infection or skin abrasion at the treatment site
  • If you are Under 18 (except in the treatment of Osgood-Schlatter disease)

This list is not exhaustive and other conditions may limit the suitability for the treatment. A thorough initial assessment must be performed by the podiatrist before treatment can commence.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the individual response. The effect of the treatment is cumulative, so you will typically need more than one (3–5) treatment. Very often though, you will experience relief right after the first treatment.

How often will I need the treatment?

Most indications require 3–5 treatments which are done 3–10 days apart, depending on the patient’s tolerance and their tissue response.

Are there any restrictions after the treatment?

It is recommended that patients refrain from physical activity, especially one that would involve the treated region, for about 48 hours following each treatment session.
